SPLIT SQUARES

The Block of the Month for June is
RED and WHITE
These snappy looking blocks can be assembled MANY ways to make quilts for our Aussie Heroes.

The cool weather is upon us…it’s a good time for sewing!

These are a few fabrics in my collection that I considered for my sample blocks.
All of these would make great blocks.

Small amounts of black or grey printed on either red or white are suitable.
Plain red or plain white will work, as will batiks and tone-on-tone red fabrics and
tone-on-tone white fabrics.
When choosing fabrics with a printed design, please use gender neutral designs as the
majority of our Recipients are men.
Use…
 100% cotton fabrics
1/4 inch seam allowance
CUTTING THE FABRIC
From both the red and the white fabric cut
  • One 8 1/2 inch square
  • 2 rectangles 2 1/2 x 8 1/2 inch
  • 2 rectangles 2 1/2 x 12 1/2 inch

CONSTRUCT TWO BLOCKS
Sew the  smaller rectangles to either side of the squares of the opposite colour
Press the seam allowance to the RED side
Sew the larger rectangles to the opposite sides as before
Press the seam allowance to the RED side
Cut each block diagonally in half as shown in picture below
Take one triangle from each block and place with right sides together.  Pin the long diagonal edge before sewing as this is a bias seam and can stretch.  Sew the seam and then press the seam allowance to one side.  And there you have them…two Split Square blocks.
Don’t trim the blocks.
All blocks will be trimmed to make them the size required
for each quilt.
Every quilt is an original design, created to meet the requirements of our Recipients.
