Operation Southern Discovery – Departures No.3 & 4
And yes, there are more troops heading south to Antarctica. Originally we understood they would be travelling together as a group, so there was bit of a rush to get the15+ quilts and personalised LBs made in time, but as it turns out, they are departing in dribs and drabs over the summer season, some on board the icebreaker and some by airplane from various airports.
The quilts and LBs are nearly as well travelled as the expeditioners. The quilt blocks were made by BOMers from all over Australia, sent to Bobbie in northern NSW where she worked her magic, and the completed tops were then posted down to AHQ in Sydney where they were quilted and finished. A large bundle of Qs and LBs then travelled to Canberra where they were handed over to me to bring back to Hobart.
D3. Plans change, and three sets were promptly sent to Victoria as their recipients were departing from Avalon airport last week. The Op SD team in Hobart arranged for photos of the happy men with their quilts.
Quilts made by Bobbie and the Mystery BOMers, quilted by Philomena. Not photographed, but their LBs made by Cathy Hpr (2) and Anne H.
D4. One lucky sailor is travelling on board the icebreaker RSV Nuyina, departing from Hobart this week. He should arrive at Casey base in time for Christmas. He was presented with his quilt and LB upon arrival in Hobart – pictured here with the Commander of OP SD, WGCDR Nick.
Quilt made by Bobbie and the Mystery BOMers, quilted by Philomena; LB by Bridget. Thanks very much Anne.
Til next time…. Keep spreading the word and happy stitching!
